A month ago, I thought of having a terrarium party. It would be a small gathering of people exchanging plants and assembling terrariums. To increase my stock of plants, I began gathering succulent cuttings and they took over my brain. Everywhere I go now I'm scanning for my next "sampling" opportunity. LOW TIDE: BINDING SESSION #1

Sunday I bound the first batch of Low Tide books! Process images and details under the cut.

This was my first time binding books. I found these two videos extremely helpful: 1 2

All the printing was done at FedEx. The pages are standard copy paper and the cover is card stock.

First I sandwiched my pages between scrap paper and meter sticks and clamped them tightly together with binder clips. Then I applied two coats of Gorilla glue to the spine-edge of the pages and let them dry. (0.5 hr)

The page block was then wrapped in wax paper (an empty cereal bag works) and pressed under a heavy weight. (0.5 hr)

Lastly I glued on the cover.

As you can see in the topmost photo, I lacked some foresight and the cover image ended up too far to the right. This first batch has already been given away to friends, but I'll try to correct that for next time.

For the past three years, summer has been my most stressful, but also rewarding, season. I recently spent time in Ann Arbor going to a conference and seeing family and friends. Arrived back home, overcame some grad school hurdles, and now am about to crack open two new treasures: a Pentel pocket brush pen and a Wacom Intuos tablet.

While in Ann Arbor I stopped by the awesome Vault of Midnight and picked up James Stokoe's vibrant and gnarly Orc Stain. At home, I stopped by my local Borders (R.I.P.) and picked up the Ax alternative manga anthology. It's really inspiring to see such diverse styles. I was/am totally that kid that would hole up in the graphic novel section of Borders five times for every one time I bought something. I'm so sorry Borders!

Today I stopped by Isotope comics for the first time and was stunned by their DIY comics section. Now I wish to have my work there too. These new tools and beautiful books make me feel very lucky and excited for the rest of this summer.

I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit of Eugune Von Bruenchenhein's work at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore earlier this year. What a way to be: living in the Midwest in the mid-1900's and rarely leaving your house, but also voyaging into other universes. I wonder how much the internet has changed how art influences spread. Now sources of inspiration are more accessible, but will work like Von Bruenchenhein's become even scarcer? AJ Fosik and Alex Grey give me hope. There is so much care in how they accurately depicting their visions.

Pedaled around downtown Palo Alto today trying to find a public place to sketch. I discovered what sketch crawls were recently and really want to participate in one. I thought I could give it a try by myself first, but I didn't find any good places to sit with an interesting view. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right areas. After pacing up and down a few blocks I began feeling...creepy and self-conscious. So I rode back home and drew on the couch. Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow.

I LOVE Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida. It has everything you could want in a manga: amazing art, compelling storyline, tough chicks, tough dudes, dark humor, tons of action, loads of grit, and zombies! It also lacks everything you could not want in a manga: inane romance, plot dawdling, and eye sparkles. Last time I was this excited about a manga was when I spent all my babysitting earnings on Battle Angel Alita volumes in high school. The cyberpunk aesthetic and angst in this manga really bring me back. I like reading it while listening to the harder tracks from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It makes me that special vigor of being 16 again.

Went to Año Nuevo State Park yesterday to witness elephant seal breeding season. It was a little too hot for the seals, but some were still fighting, mating, and nursing. The mating and gestation of elephant seals is particularly interesting. Adult females spend about 24 days a year NOT pregnant. Elephant seal embryos, however, remain a blastocyst and do not implant for the first few months after fertilization. I think it is amazing how embryonic development, something that can progress like clockwork, has dramatically adapted in this species.

In efforts to bring myself back to life, I escaped to Death Valley. The natural landscapes there will awe and punish you. Back in lab, I am listening to Bison B.C. and thinking back to the dry heat, scratches, and sprawling earth of the desert. Bison B.C. are the band I am most looking forward to seeing next month at the Missing Link Festival.

I also just saw Wolves in the Throne Room play a great show. There were cloth panels hanging behind them displaying wild animals of the American Northwest. Wolves should get together with David Attenborough and make a nature documentary.

"Metronome" by Tiffany Bozic

Artist Tiffany Bozic collaborated with the California Academy of Sciences in 2007 to create From the Depths, a science and art exhibit about deep sea invertebrates. Bozic is based in Oakland and has continued to produce beautiful, finely rendered depictions of animals and plants in fantastical compositions. I first learned about her through this collaboration and look forward to seeing her work in person and attending NightLife someday.

Giant Squid is another bay area gem I just learned about. A week after they play three bay area shows, of course. I have been listening to their recent release, The Ichthyologist, nonstop. Their music incorporates a whole lot: cello, horns, clean and screamed vocals, story telling, sick science metaphors, and total heartache. I've read the front man works at the San Francisco Aquarium as a professional scuba diver and shark feeder, which makes him extra extra cool.

This quarter is quickly coming to a close. I have been a sort of ichthyologist myself these past two months by working with Astatotilapia burtoni. Another amazing fish is Macropinna microstoma, recently filmed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

During my last few days in Asia, I stayed at a hotel in Beijing right across the freeway from 798 Space. I spent many hours browsing the galleries and flipping through contemporary Chinese art books and magazines. In the hotel room there was a magazine featuring an article about the "dying folk arts" of China, papercutting included. This pushed me to finally try learning papercutting myself and I picked up some how-to books from Xidan books. So far, I still have not found the names of any Chinese papercut artists who have devoted themselves to modern experimentation. I have, however, found two amazing Japanese papercut artists, Kako Ueda and Hideo Iwasaki (who is also a biologist!), as well as Dutch rubbercutter Thea Tolsma.

You cannot watch Adultswim.com videos outside of the U.S. While in Japan, I looked for dark humor supplement. I found it in one of the huge geek towers in Akihabara, when the cover of Kiminori Wakasugi's Detroit Metal City (DMC) caught my eye. DMC is about an eponymous death metal band from Tokyo* that is slowly making a name for itself through rowdy stage antics and its seemingly superhuman frontman. However, behind his corpse paint and hilariously vulgar lyrics, the frontman is secretly a very sensitive and naive young guy from the country who really just wants to play Swedish pop music. His true personality and stage persona occasionally bleed into one another, causing him to live a comically tortured life. The comic is still ongoing, an OAV came out yesterday, and a live action movie is coming out 08/23/08 (with Gene Simmons playing a Western metal musician).

With big thanks to Alyssa's translation skills, I have read and own the first three volumes. The comic is currently being scanlated into English by Scum-Scans. So far, DMC has embarassingly upstaged everyone they have had to share the stage with. This made me wonder what would happen if my fantasy cartoon metal crossover happened and DMC opened for the Asian leg of a Dethklok tour, because although DMC always manages to come out on top, few around Dethklok live very long.

*While I was not able to find any actual Japanese death metal shows during my trip, I did visit an awesome little bar in Nakano called Rock Bar Heaven. It consists of one man, Mr. Shimizu, and his entire DVD and CD collection. He will play anything you pick. We enjoyed beers while Vader, Slayer, and Manowar live shows played on the big screen.

VACATION

My friend Alyssa and I are visiting China and Japan this summer, starting in a few hours. I have left my wonderful lab and my terrible apartment. As expected, I am armed with 30 pounds of gifts for relatives and phrase books to crutch me through my travels. I look forward to brutal bargaining, eating, exploring underbellies, seeing old friends and family, and being carefree for a while.

I have known of Aya Kato for a couple years and still enjoy visiting her very beautiful, older, less vectored work once in while. Bruno 9li is a Brazilian artist whose inkwork started out sparse, but then became possessed and fractalized. I think both artists' latest works have converged a bit, although Kato and Bruno 9li's genders are still very clear.

The works of these two artists are absolutely flooring. They both produce the kind of imagery that makes you ache thinking about the hours of practice and development that stand between their abilities and your own. Since I learned of both roughly around the same time and think they share some major elements, I am posting them together: the dark kings of organic stipple dotting.

Zouravliov's Delivery on the top and Baizley's Red Album artwork on the bottom. Neither artist has a personal website, but you can click the images above to go to their respective Myspaces. Ambidextrous in art and music, Baizley is also the frontman of Baroness, a band for guys with beards and sensitive sides. I look forward to seeing them later this month, perhaps Baizley will have some prints for sale.

Tonight marks the second time a silver-haired bat has flown into my apartment. The first one stayed the night, let out high-pitched clicks the following night, then disappeared. Tonight's is bigger and...somewhere.

I didn't know I was unnecessarily scared of any animal until tonight. Michigan bats eat bugs (I am not afraid of bugs at all). But when a bat is maniacally zooming through your apartment like a foot-long, black sickle, it's terrifying. I put on an oversized leather jacket to protect my arms and grabbed the only club-like thing in my apartment, my old roommate's stringless black guitar. The nosferatu flew and remains upstairs, where my scanner is, so I can't show the drawing I did of the silly scene until the coast is clear.

A few days later. Bats offer a lot to obsess over. They represent 20% of mammal species and no one knows for sure where they came from (subterrestrial aliens?). The Ernst Haeckel illustration above, like most Haeckel's, was drawn with huge margins for decor, but these bat CT scans give an idea of how diverse bats actually are. Highlights include Anoura fistulata (wins greatest mammal tongue to body ratio), Myzopoda schliemanni (climbs with suckers on its thumbs), Noctilo leporinus (fishes with huge taloned feet), Ectophylla alba (adorable leucistic?? tent maker), Centurio senex (uses extra skin to cover its face while sleeping) and Pteropus vampyrus (wing span of 6 feet).

Project X-ray, a seriously considered military tactic during WWII, was set on dropping live bats carrying bombs into enemy cities. The bats would disperse themselves, roost, and detonate. The project was sacked for its slow development compared to the Manhattan Project. A doctorate student in my department told me the US Army Corps of Engineers is still currently doing research on bats, but now to ensure that military air operations do not impact bat populations. He also told me how his ex-girlfriend did research on bats. She would go under bridges where bats roosted and then inject them. That is some of the gothiest nerding I have ever heard.

PIEBALDISM & LEUCISM

Currently, I am a researcher in an endocrinology lab that works with Xenopus laevis.

Last week I was staging tadpoles for an experiment and discovered our new spawn contained several albino-appearing tadpoles. Upon closer inspection I found their eyes were dark and they all had a few spots on their heads: not true albinos. They were spawned from pigmented frogs, so my lab and I were quite excited about the appearance of this mutation. We called it "blonde" or "pigmentally challenged." Then my boss came back from out of town and set us straight.

The tadpoles are leucistic, and since they do have some pigment, they are piebald. (I like many bands that have medical term-derived names, but Piebald is lame and gummed up my online research.) Leucistic animals have less or no melanocytes, versus albino animals which have normal levels of melanocytes that cannot produce melanin. The body's melanocytes, except for the eyes, are lured from the neural crest by growth factors to give us coats of color. Leucism results from mutation in a few known genes, including c-kit, mtf, and Pax-3, all of which play roles in development. Given the tadpoles' current robustness (some are beginning to metamorphose) and lack of strong craniofacial defects, I suspect they have as incomplete loss of function mutation of c-kit. Their melanocytes aren't recognizing an important growth factor (SCF) well, and therefore didn't travel very far or did not survive and proliferate.

Completely leucistic and piebald animals are high in demand for some species for their novelty and beauty. My cat, Kevin, for example is a Turkish Van, a naturally piebald breed of cat. I didn't pay a cent for him. I do have $$$ in my eyes for any of our piebald tadpoles who reach adulthood since they are of no use in the lab, but I do not intend to breed anymore or encourage inbreeding of the ones we do have. Unless for research, inbreeding never has to happen. I don't care how majestic white tigers are. With special attention, let's hope at least 5 of these little guys make it.

P.S. Please don't name your band Leucism or Leucifer. I will post an entry of much better, untaken biological terms for band names in the future.

Hello Bloggers. This journal was created to record and catalog biological interests, visual art, and music I come across. I hope it will be better than tossing them haphazardly in my memory where my current obsessions will corrode them and sleep deprivation will make them difficult to recall.
